Discover the coastline of East Lothian on this private day tour from Edinburgh. A day full of beautiful scenery, castles and an opportunity to see a local brewery or whisky distillery. This tour can be tailor-made to your request or we can follow our suggested route below...
Within a 30min drive from Edinburgh we reach the attractive coastline of the Firth of Forth with views across to Fife. We will pass by many renowned golf courses and towns such as Gullane. Our first stop of the day is at Dirleton Castle. Mostly in ruins this castle has kept its historic medieval appearance. The Victorian garden has the longest herbaceous border in the world.
After we then go to the seaside town of North Berwick. This was a popular holiday resort for Glaswegians during the Victorian times. We will have some time to walk the beach and also as an option visit the Scottish Seabird Centre.
Then on to Tantallon Castle with its impressive high walls. Once the seat of the Douglas Earls of Angus, one of the most powerful baronial families in Scotland. An impregnable castle which endured 3 major sieges until it came to an end with Cromwell's assault in 1651. Inside is a great example of a cannon that would have been used to defend. The castle sits on a sea cliff with spectacular views of the Bass Rock.
In Dunbar you will have free time for lunch or optionally we can book a table in a traditional pub. From the harbour we can see views of what is left over of Dunbar Castle. The town was the birthplace of John Muir, the famous naturalist who was the founder of Yosimite National Park in America.
For the afternoon we can offer a few different options... We can visit Belhaven Brewery which Scotland's oldest independent brewer, or go to Glenkinchie Distillery and discover how whisky is made, or alternatively go to the Museum of Flight to hop on board the Concord.
