Linlithgow Palace was built by the great Renaissance Kings of the Stuart Density. When the plague hit Edinburgh the Royal Family moved to Linlithgow and the nobles followed. For this reason a palace with an impressive Great Hall was needed. Often called the Lion's Den it was the scene of many medieval feasts. In the 16th century King James V gifted the palace to his French bride, Mary De Guise, along with an elaborately decorated fountain that once flowed wine for grand events. This was also the birthplace of one of our most famous Royal figures; Mary Queen of Scots.
After the tour of the palace we can then take a short walk to the loch with spectacular views of the original gate house where the drawbridge entrance was once in place. It is also the place of a medieval Joisting re-enactment that is held here every year. Across the the palace is St Michael's Church with it's aluminum steeple on top of the tower. If it is open we can take a look at the inside of this important building of Linlithgow. The historic Burgh Hall sits at the bottom of the road leading to the palace
On the way back we will take a detour to the seaside town of South Queensferry for views of the Firth of Forth and it's famous bridges. In total the tour will take about 4 hours.
