Enjoy a private day tour from Edinburgh to the historic town of Falkirk. This tour takes you on a 2000 year journey from the time of the Romans and Picts to the futuristic Falkirk Wheel and empowering Kelpies.
From Edinburgh (or Glasgow) we travel to the town of Falkirk. Sitting on the central belt of Scotland it was the place of many factories including Cannon makers of Caron Iron Works. In the 18th and 19th century 2 canals were dug to connect Glasgow to Edinburgh. Falkirk was the place of 11 locks which took about a day to travel up the staircase. Eventually the canal was abandoned but then the Millennium project began. This restoration included the incredible Falkirk Wheel boat lift which cut down the day travel to 15 minutes! The height is the equivalent of 8 double decker buses stacked on top of one another. The gondolas hold 500,000 litres of water, the same as an Olympic swimming pool. It uses 1.5kWh of energy to turn, about the same it would take to boil 8 household kettles.
After a ride on the Falkirk Wheel we will go to Callendar House for lunch. A 19th century mansion house open to the public. The upper levels display a museum of Falkirk's history and the Antonine Wall. This wall sits infront of the house, it was originally built by the Romans to keep the Painted Face Warriors (the Picts) out. As well as a Georgian Kitchen made by Caron Iron Works. We can have lunch in the tearoom.
Last visit of the day is the special Kelpies. Constructed in 2014 it was the brain child of Andy Scott. It is modelled on the Clydesdale work horses which lifted the many good off the barges including Scotland's national soft drink "Iron Bru". They take on the name, Kelpies, from mythical creatures who prey on humans by fresh water sources. Enjoy a walking tour from the Kelpies guide and enter into one of the horse heads.
This tour is available from Edinburgh, Glasgow and the cruise ports of South Queensferry and Greenock.
