Outlander Castles Private Tour
Description
This private tour is focused on the castles and sights that have been used in the famous TV series Outlander. Our qualified guides will give you the history and story behind each location. You will also learn the story of the Jacobites and Stuart dynasty.
Our first stop will be at Doune Castle. Used in the first series as Castle Leoch, home of the Clan Mackenzie. The actual castle was home to the Duke of Albany, a Stuart and brother of the king. Later used as a Royal hunting lodge then a rebel prison used by the Jacobites. This was also used in the Monty Python movie Holy Grail as Swamp Castle.
After we then go to Linlithgow Palace, another famous Stewart house. This was the home of many Stuart Kings and birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. The 500 year old fountain in the middle was gifted by James V to French bride Mary De Guise; it is in the shape of a wedding layer cake. The palace was used as Wentworth Prison in Outlander
Lastly we will go to Blackness Castle which sits on the Firth of Forth. Its nickname is The Ship that never Sailed as the castle walls take on the shape of a ship. This was a prison during the Napoleonic Wars. In Outlander it was used as Fort William because there is not much left of the actual Fort in the highland town.
This tour can be tailor-made if you have some alternative ideas to the above itinerary.
Note: the tourist guides may not be Outlander buffs so the tour will primarily be based on the actual history of each castle.
